The effect of air pollution & climate on hospital admissions for chronic obstructive airways disease: a non-parametric alternative

چکیده
Medical researchers have discovered an alarming increase in rates of respiratory disease in many countries. Exposure to environmental factors such as air pollution, ozone and pollen seem to be possible causes. In recent years several studies have shown a short term association between exposure to air borne particles and ozone and an increase in respiratory hospital admissions. The aim of this paper is to examine methodological issues in epidemiological time series studies involving count data. As a vehicle of illustration, we consider the effect of air pollution and climate on daily counts of hospital admissions for chronic obstructive airways disease. We apply non-parametric (Generalized Additive) models and parametric (Generalized Linear) models, and examine the relationship between hospital admissions for chronic obstructive airways disease and the short term exposure to pollutants. We show that the Generalized Additive Model is superior to the Generalized Linear Model when capturing the non-linear pattern of the response variable with a number of the covariates. One problem in epidemiological time series studies is incorporating autocorrelation in the statistical models. We show that correct specification of the non-linear functional form, and allowing for seasonality, will in some cases remove the autocorrelation inherent in morbidity/mortality data. We also present an alternative residual analysis when the response is not normally distributed. Department of General Practice & Public Health, The University of Melbourne, VIC 3010, Australia. Air pollution and hospital admission in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Tehran, Iran
Objective: There are many communities at risk by a series of air pollution episodes. Tehran is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The presence of one or more air pollutants with a certain concentration in a particular period of time can cause several adverse effects on human and animals’ well-being that can cause much morbidity. There are several pollutants in the ai...
متن کاملHospital admissions for asthma and chronic obstructive airways disease in east London hospitals and proximity of residence to main roads.
We describe a matched case-control study investigating the association between respiratory illness and proximity of residence to main roads. The study was carried out in response to previously inconsistent reports on this question; the null hypothesis was of no association of traYc related air pollution to respiratory illness, hospital admissions for asthma and chronic obstructive airways disea...
متن کاملThe effect of ozone and PM10 on hospital admissions for pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a national multicity study.
A case-crossover study was conducted in 36 US cities to evaluate the effect of ozone and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of < or =10 microm (PM10) on respiratory hospital admissions and to identify which city characteristics may explain the heterogeneity in risk estimates. Respiratory hospital admissions and air pollution data were obtained for 1986-1999. In a meta-analysis base...
متن کاملAir pollution and hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: are their potentially sensitive groups?
Recent studies showed that air pollution is a risk factor for hospitalization for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, there is limited evidence to suggest which subpopulations are at higher risk from air pollution. This study was undertaken to examine the modifying effect of specific secondary diagnosis (including hypertension, diabetes, pneumonia, congestive heart failure) o...
متن کاملCardiopulmonary Mortalities and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Attributed to Ozone Air Pollution
Background & Aims of the Study: Ozone is a summer pollutant which can cause respiratory complications, eye burning sensation and failure of immune defense against infectious diseases. Ahvaz city (southwestern Iran) is one of the seven polluted Iranian metropolises. In this study we examined the health impacts of ozone pollution in Ahvaz city during years 2010 and 2011. Ma...
